Since 1 January 2026 the euro has been Bulgaria’s official currency. The fixed conversion rate is 1.95583 lev to 1 euro. Since 1 February 2026 the lev is no longer legal tender.
For visitors from Georgia this means that payments in Bulgaria are made in euro and cash machines dispense euro.
If you still have lev:
- the Bulgarian National Bank exchanges them free of charge, without limits and without a deadline;
- commercial banks and certain post offices exchange them until 31 December 2026 and may charge a fee from 1 July 2026.
