Since 1 January 2026 every tourist entering Georgia must hold a valid health and accident insurance policy. The requirement comes from the Law of Georgia on Tourism and also applies to Bulgarian citizens travelling visa-free.
The policy must:
- cover the entire stay, including the days of arrival and departure;
- have a sum insured of at least 30,000 GEL;
- be in Georgian or English, on paper or in electronic form.
It may be issued by a Georgian or a foreign insurer. It must state the parties to the contract, the covered territory, the subject of the insurance, the start and end dates, the insured risks, the sum insured, and the premium with its place and terms of payment.
The requirement does not apply to holders of diplomatic and special visas; holders of diplomatic, official, service and special passports; accredited staff of embassies, consulates and international organisations and their accredited family members; persons whose entry is governed by Georgia’s international treaties; and drivers in international freight and passenger transport.
Before you travel, check that your policy names Georgia and a sum of at least 30,000 GEL. Keep it on your phone or printed so you can show it on request. The Consular Department hotline of the MFA of Georgia is +995 32 2 94 50 50.
